The Virya-Nugget Archive
"Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I'll meet you there."
Dschalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī – short Rumi, (1207–1273), Persian Sufi mystique
Here you will find a collection of texts that have come into being over the past years for the Virya meditators – irregularly, as inspiration has allowed.
These "Nuggets" are not systematic treatises, but snapshots: thoughts, insights and invitations that have emerged in the context of meditative and spiritual practice. Some are short, some more extensive – but all arise from the same impulse: the wish to put something essential into words.
Originally I sent the links to these texts by email to all Virya meditators. More and more frequently I was asked to make the older Nuggets accessible on the homepage as well, and I have now finally done so. Little by little I will upload more of the older ones here, as well as the new ones as they appear.
Perhaps you will find a thought that touches you, a perspective that makes you pause, or simply a small moment of stillness in everyday life.
Browse at your leisure.
Warmly,
Heiko

When the World is on Fire - 23.05.2026
The new Nugget I am sending you begins with politics – and I know that does not sit well with everyone. I ask for your understanding. But sometimes the world pushes so loudly at the door that it would be dishonest to ignore it.
That is precisely the starting point of this Nugget: how do we, as people on the spiritual path, deal with injustice, war and political developments that concern us deeply? Are we allowed to be angry? And how do we find our way back to what we truly are – without losing sight of the world in the process?

An Easter Egg and the Silence from Which All Paths Arise - 05.04.2026Listenelement 2
Sometimes life brings together, in the most unassuming of moments, things that seem worlds apart – a conversation at the pharmacy, a Turkish neighbor, an ancient passage from the Bible, and what we explore together in meditation.
Something we could all do with right now: a sense of connectedness.

The Less Traveled Road Within - 01.12.2025Listenelement 4
A few days ago, I revisited Robert Frost’s famous poem The Road Not Taken. As I let the lines sink in, one thought became very clear: in our meditation practice, we constantly stand at inner crossroads—between thinking and awareness, between perception and the space behind it.

The Joy of Eating - 14.08.2025
A few days ago, I was sitting in a Buddhist temple in Korea, observing the monks during their shared meal—silent, yet deeply connected. That moment showed me how much meals can nourish not only the body but also the heart, like the World Happiness Report say, too.

90 years of compassion — Happy Birthday! - 01.07.2025
Today’s nugget is simple to explain yet very special:
The Dalai Lama will celebrate his 90th birthday this coming Sunday.

Help Yourself and a Little Secret - 02.12.2024
The end of the year is approaching, and it's a good time to reflect a little. I’d like to share a few small reflections with you in the last Virya-Nugget of this year.

Human Connectedness - 03.09.2024
An encounter in the park today moved me deeply, so I wanted to share it with you right away.

Being human - 08.06.2024
Have you ever thought about what it means to be human? And what is significant for that?
Perhaps you would like to reflect on this with me in the new Nugget:
Being human.
And by the way, you'll find out if the Dalai Lama is actually enlightened.

About the Perfect Moment - 29.04.2024
Is there a perfect moment for meditation?
